Modern aluminium production facilities all over the world experience cell leakages on a regular basis. This is one of the most dangerous parts of the aluminium production process. No aluminium manufacturer has managed to eliminate this problem entirely; this is a persistent problem without a solution. The objective of this project is to develop a system that can log temperature measurements of collector bars in an aluminium reduction cell and store them in a database. The system would replace manual thermal inspection. Thermal images of the cell collector bars were captured with a FLIR E40 thermal camera. The thermal images were analyzed with modern computer vision techniques: linear boundaries are used to split the images into classes. The thermal images are relatively homogenous and can be split into categories with 99.95% specificity. The thermal reading from the images have
the same accuracy as the thermal camera: 2°C or 2%. The application of this system is more frequent thermal inspection with data logging for long term process control. This should result in a safer industrial environment and more cost efficient pot maintenance.
