This project is a master’s dissertation for an M.Ed degree with emphasis on special education. The project aims to answer the question whether it is possible to use everyday surroundings on one hand, as well as Howard Gardner‘s theory on mathematical education on the other hand, to meet students diverse educational and social needs in an inclusive school. The dissertation is dived into two parts. The theoretical exposition covers the paradigm on which the collection of projects is based. It discusses the educational strategy applied in inclusive schools and sheds light on Howard Gardner‘s theory on the development of mathematical education. Furthermore, it covers features on outdoor learning, as well as cooperative learning, as means to promote students learning and social skills. Finally, this chapter discusses student assessment as an integral part of learning. The second part of the paper contains a collection of projects in mathematics and a teacher‘s manual. The objective of the tasks is to approach mathematical problems in an unconventional way, and thus encouraging the participation of all students. Students approach the tasks given on their own terms, with their interests and strengths in the forefront. The tasks should all be solved in pairs or groups to make sure, that, while students improve their mathematical skills, they simultaneously strengthen their social abilities and sense for cooperation. The tasks are based on the objectives in the National Curriculum Guide in fourth grade mathematics. In the teacher‘s manual I seek to discuss the paradigm, as well as other approaches for project work assessment. Also, I strive to give further ideas on how to use the collection of projects, called Mathematics in Nature, which is also the title of this dissertation.
