The importance of creativity in childrens education. The role of the arts in
    promoting creative education
The aim of this dissertation is to view ideas about the importance of
creativity in children's education and what role the arts play in that context.
I quote many scholars to support my case, but preferably I want to
mention John Dewey and Elliot W. Eisner. I support the education
philosophy of John Dewey, who was very influential in education in the
early twentieth century, and his philosophy still plays a big role in Icelandic
school community. I also support the work of Elliot W. Eisner who is an
American educational expert. He places a strong emphasis on arts
education in schools and feels the methodology which is used there should
be transferred to other subjects in childrens education. He believes that
arts education and working in art, increased levels of study and the
development of students in a positive way.
In the new national curriculum which was published in 2011, creativity
has received more attention in the general education than before and
shows the importance of creative thinking in education with children.
Creativity is now one of six basic elements meant to improve education and
it is important to have it as a guiding light throughout the education.
We are all different and learn in different ways. Trying to meet the
needs of every student teaching must be based on flexibility and diversity.
The arts are an important basis for promoting creativity in education for all
with diverse and creative teaching methods. The methodology used in
teaching art can enhance the quality of general education and give it a
deeper meaning. The arts are a good tool to teach students to learn and
think differently and to see more than one perspective in the learning
process. The arts can contribute to the environment in schools where
students can enjoy their learning and are encouraged to learn creatively.
