Titill:

The aim of this master thesis was to design reading projects for pupils in
first grade in elementary school. The projects consist of educational games
with the point of practicing various factors of reading skills.
The former part of the thesis discusses reading: what reading is; how
people read; and how people develop their reading skills. The main factors
of reading skills – i.e. phonological awareness, decoding, reading fluency,
and reading comprehension – as well as of reading instructions are dwelled
upon, and the instructional model of ‘Response to Intervention’ (RTI)
elaborated. The main object of the RTI model is to meet the needs of all –
or almost all – pupils in the general education classroom, and research
findings indicate that the model reduces the need of special education.
Then, the Peer-Assisted Leaning Strategies (PALS) is introduced. The
purpose of PALS is to meet the educational needs of a broader range of
pupils, and research results reveal that PALS increases reading
achievement. At the end of the former part of the thesis Vygotsky’s
approach of children’s play is discussed. Vygotsky theorized on the relation
between play and learning, and his theories support the reading projects
introduced in the latter part of the thesis. In play, children are oblivious of
their surrounding, and carry out their work with enthusiasm. Thereby, they
are more likely to work independently, and to concentrate better. Hence,
the form of play was utilized in the reading projects.
In the latter part of the master thesis, the 26 games designed for the
reading project are introduced. According to Response to Intervention the
teaching plan should be diverse so as to cater for the needs of
miscellaneous pupils. A work station meets that requirement and the
reading games are thought of as a part of a literacy work station. Thus, the
pupils concentrate on reading during the whole session, and that should
promote their reading achievement. A teaching plan which introduces all
the letters of the alphabet is set up, and the games applied in literacy work
stations. The teaching plan is based on the objects of the RTI instructional
model, and it presumed that PALS is applied. Therefore, the aim of the
games is twofold: firstly, to lessen the need of special education, and,
secondly, to enhance the reading achievement of the pupils.
