Footprints in the sand : pupils´ participation and influence in school evaluation
According to laws of Icelandic schools nr. 91/2008 they must practise methods for evaluation. Schools can use different methods when evaluating. Each one of these methods is influenced by the culture and targets within every school, and are all considered equally important. The curriculum for Icelandic secondary schools states explicitly that pupils should participate in the evaluation process and get opportunities to influence decisions made in matters concerning them and their learning. This MA thesis is an attempt to seek means to add pupils to the self evaluation programs in Icelandic secondary schools. The argument for pupils’ participation in the self evaluation procedure is put forward. It is argued that pupils’ participation in dialogues with teachers about learning and teaching can be sensible and logical to all stakeholders, the pupils themselves, the teachers and the school community as a whole. As pupils have got some interesting views and suggestions they have to be secured so they will reach the ones that gain from listening and have the power to make changes in order to make improvements. Some co-construction of teachers and pupils is recommended. In that sense coaching and coaching sessions of pupils and teachers is under discussion. It is hoped that pupils will see their opinions and contributions honored and seen in plans and improvements made in the school. At the same time, teachers will get opportunities to improve and develop their profession led by their pupils´ views. A method, which is believed to enable pupils to come forward with their opinions on learning and teaching, is introduced. The method, the Grow model, gives pupils and teachers a way to exchange views, give feedback and discuss possible resolvements. Thus pupils might witness changes in school due to their participation and therefore know that their contribution for development and planning is fully respected. Pupils and teachers were asked what they think of pupils participating in dialogues about learning and teaching and about their opinions on the Grow model. The answers come, on one hand, from pupils and teachers in Dene Magna, a secondary school in England that is using the Grow model as a base for pupils´ and teachers´ co-construction. On the other hand, the expectations of pupils and teachers of an Icelandic secondary school, Arskóli in Saudarkrokur, are sought in the belief that a method is needed to enable pupils to influence learning and teacing in their school.
The conclusions of the research indicate that the Grow model could be a good way for pupils and teachers to have meaningful conversations on learning and teaching. Those who have had an experience of the Grow model think it is effective in leading pupils´ and teachers´ dialogues about learning and teaching. Pupils and teachers in Arskoli are interested in adding pupils to the procedure of evaluation. The Grow model is assumed to suit the evaluation method that is practised in Arskoli, Gaedagreinar. Both methods rely on active participation of stakeholders, deliberate democratic conversations, mutual resolvements and intentions about improvements. Both cherish a constant reevaluation on the utility and value of both methods for the development of the school.
