lesa. Það er því óvíst og raunar ólíklegt að nemandi sem hefur lært að lesa sögur
sé þar með orðinn læs á náttúrufræðitexta sem eru allt annarrar gerðar en sögur og
kalla því á sérstakan leshátt. Ætla má að þetta valdi mörgum nemendum erfiðleik-
um. En fleira kemur til. Hér á landi sem víða annars staðar er mikil áhersla lögð á
námsbókina og miðlun upplýsinga. Þetta verður gjarnan á kostnað verklegra at-
A recent national curriculum for Icelandic primary schools highlights literacy as a
key eductional issue. However, it also makes clear that ideas about literacy have
been changing so that currently literacy is generally considered not solely as a
matter of technical skills but also a matter of meaning making closely connected
to experience. The article presented here takes this as a point of departure and
may be thought of as an effort to rethink science education in Icelandic schools
in light of the current emphasis on literacy. The author points out that following
the tradition we tend to think of science teaching as transmission of information
while not paying so much attention to the texts the students are supposed to
read and how succesful the students are in this respect. Science texts, the author
argues, are in many respects different from the texts (stories) students most
often use while initially learning how to read. Therefore, it is by no means certain
and even unlikely that a student who has learnt to read stories will then be able
to read science texts that are of a different type and therefore demand a special
reading strategy. Plausibly, this may cause problems for many students. How-
ever, there are more issues of concern in this scenario. Similar to many other
countries there is in Iceland a strong emphasis in science teaching on the text-
book and on delivering the content, to the degree that practical work is often
given a peripheral status. This implies that our students have, in many cases,
very limited experiences of the things and phenomena the texts address and,
consequently, limited possibilities to make good sense of what they are reading
because experience is a prerequisite for meaningful reading. The author sup-
ports this view both in light of his own experiences and in lieu of ideas developed
by situative theorists like James Paul Gee and Lawrence W. Barsalou, in parti-
cular the notion of situated conceptualization. In conclusion, the author puts
forward the view that if people want to improve science teaching in Icelandic
schools they should place less emphasis on covering the content and more em-
phasis on helping student to develop their understandings so that they become
both better at reading the word and reading the word.
