This article discusses the ways in which philosophy can hinder boredom in the
upper secondary school. The students´ boredom is a big problem as it is one of
the main causes for the far too many dropouts. Not the least due to the fact how
costly the dropout is for the society at large it is important to look at all possible
ways that might diminish it. Philosophical contemplation and approach
strengthens independent thought and activeness, it offers freedom, but demands
discipline at the same time, and it enforces curiosity and questioning while
respecting the manifold. Including these factors in the teaching may work against
the uniformity, futility, constraint and lack of direction, which is too often
experienced in the classroom and are the main factors leading to the dropout
according to the students themselves. The philosophical approach can be
implied in many if not all of the subjects taught in the upper secondary school.
Teachers have to be informed about the educational values of philosophy to be
able to estimate if it might help them to support their work and prevent their
students from being so bored. It is up to the teachers to take an initiative to
change their teaching. The teachers alone are entitled to decide what happens in
the classroom and that has to be respected in every way.
