    Abstract
The core of the following research is a musical theatre production developed with Hlidaskoli school’s teenage level students of winter of 2011-2012. The aim of the research was to assess the effects of the school’s drama classes and the musical theatre production on social development, communication skills and sense of identity of the students. The project "Hver er ég?" (Who am I?), an original musical theatre production created by the students, was the foundation of the research.
The research involved two parts. The first part entailed staging the musical theatre production with the students, while also documenting and analysing the process. In the second part qualitative research methods were then implemented to assess the student’s opinions towards the school’s drama classes and the musical theatre production. Interviews were conducted in order to discover information that could reveal the potential effects of the production on students and the school community. Nine interviews were conducted with previous and current students and three were carried out with the school’s staff. The interviews explored their views towards the school’s drama classes and their experiences during the period of the musical theatre production.
The research results show that the school’s musical theatre productions have supported the development of a close knit teenage community and a happier student group. In the process, the participants were found to increase and strengthen their self-esteem and their social skills through creative work.
A complex project such as this, involving multiple participants, is defined by a democratic work process, cooperation, participant's strong self-identity and a creative union. The students go through a demanding process of developing ideas and production, testing their creative skills and cooperation.
