The aim of this research is to provide insight into the experience of five
mothers of children with intellectual disabilities, who went through the
general education system, and then were later transferred to a special
school. The research focused on the mothers´ experiences and views
towards their children’s schooling and their motives behind the decision to
transfer the children, and analysed the childrens’ life changes as they were
interperated by the mothers.
The thesis deals with government education policy, and light is shed on
the ideas behind the notion of inclusive education. In this thesis social
constructionism, theories on social capital and social competences and
Frønes theories on youth and socialisation are applied. It also uses two
different perspectives on disability and impairments and the role of parents
in the lives of their disabled children. The thesis applies qualitative
methods, where a phenomenological approach is used. Data was gathered
via interviews with five mothers to children with intellectual impairments,
from ages 14 to 18.
The research has shown that initially, the mothers felt that the local
general education school had welcomed the children in the beginning. In
subsequent years after initial inclusion, it had fallen short of standards and
expectations by not granting sufficient opportunities to the children to
participate in the school activities.
It is my hope that this research can contribute to an enhanced mutual
understanding between the state school system and the parents of children
with disabilities, so that the regular compulsory education school system
can more adequately meet the needs of disabled children and enhance
their participation in the school’s learning environment.
