Philosophy has for centuries been concerned with understanding it’s nature and origins. Misunderstanding however has not been a central topic for philosophers even though attempts to clarify understanding is to bypass misunderstanding. In the last decades cultural diversity, multiplicity and difference has been central to philosophical investigation. There has also been an increasing interst in communication of different groups, One of the reasons might be because of the increase of women and minority groups within philosphy. Communications are often loaded with misunderstanding’s that can either lead to quarrel or to further understanding. This essay is an attempt to explain and understand better the misunderstanding´s in relation to globalization and multicultural society, what it is and whether it can be a driving force towards understanding.
Husserl’s phenomenological philosophy provides the basis for this research through his concept “Lifeworld”. The cultual phenomenology examines our different meaning formations through the “Lifeworld” that results in how we bestow meaning upon the world around us. The “Lifeworlds” interact with each other through the process of correction that either results in misunderstanding or understanding or the meaning formations that we bestow upon the world. Gilles Deleuze’s and Félix Guattari’s philosophy about “Rizhomes” can explain the complexity of communication. In a globalized and more complex world and the tangle that in entails and thus increases misunderstanding, making it more difficult for the “Lifeworlds’” process of correction to result in understanding. This creates new challenges for understanding and new knowledge. Rosi Braidotti’s nomadic theory can explain the interactions further between different cultures and different times in a more complex society and how we are becoming more citizens in many worlds at the same time.
The social sciences have tried to come to terms with the situation of increased complexity that can result in prejudice on the basis of misunderstanding and also creates new basis for understanding. The present is not evolving in one direction, but there are many “Lifeworlds” and cultural worlds that interact and create ever new connections, So it is difficult to predict the end of history. Ulrich Beck claims that we are in the “Second Modernity” and that we live in a “Risk Socitey” where we try to secure our future with institutions that in fact undermine themselves and result in contradictions. The multiplicity of people prevents the institutions to fit all people into one system. The institutions of “First Modernity” are becoming out of date since many people find themselves between institutions or systems defined by first modernity. Therefore many people are misunderstood by the systems. Falling into gaps of systems can be equated with falling into gaps between understandings. The misunderstanding resides in this gap. The gap is unclear and it can be a starting point for the search for understanding and knowledge.
Here in this essay I will mix the first person perspective of phenomenology (that describes personal experience at the intersections of lifeworlds) and in a wider perspective of philosophy and sociology that describe systems and the power the have to control, shape, marginalize and exclude individuals. Such an approach seeks to find loopholes and cracks in systems that enable people to break from their suppressing force and to meet understanding. In everyday life we may not notice these systems that frame our reality. However if we increase our awareness about the misunderstanding that surrounds us and try to understand it better we can move towards further understanding of the world. For this to succeed we must open our eyes for differences and allow ourselves to misunderstand towards understanding. Hannah Arendt wrote Essays in Understanding where she claims generosity to be the basis for dealing with misunderstanding in a creative way. In a diverse world we need to meet each other with generosity of understanding to overcome misunderstandings.
