Zeolites are hard to analyse with traditional EMPA because the energy of the electron beam destabilises the zeolites, they lose water and sodium, and their composition changes under the electron beam. With SEM microscope it is possible to perform the analysis with an electron beam that has considerably lower energy than EMPA, thus enabling a reasonably good analysis of zeolites and other H2O-rich minerals. Of course the analytical field of the SEM microscope is a little larger than in EMPA. The research included finding a few different species of zeolites and analyse their composition with ICP-OES spectroscopy. Then the same minerals were embedded in epoxy, polished and analysed with SEM/EDS. The conclusion is that analysis of zeolites with SEM technology is simple and reliable. It does not require H2O and Na losses to be measured and is therefore easier than EMPA analysis. At this moment in time there is shortage of zeolite standards for analysis with electron beam but they should not be too difficult to make. The main difficulty with analyses such as these is the preperation of the samples. It requires embedding in thin-flowing epoxy and very delecate polishing.
