  • Undanfarin misseri hefur Ísland staðið í deilum við ESB, Færeyjar, Noreg og Rússland um makrílstofninn. Í fyrstu var deilt um hvort Ísland yrði talið sem strandríki varðandi makrílstofninn og krafðist Ísland þess að vera talið sem strandríki, allt frá fyrstu samningum þessara þjóða um makrílinn sem gerður var 1999, en var alltaf neitað. Breyting varð á árið 2009 og Ísland var viðurkennt sem strandríki og þar með hleypt að samningaborðinu um heildarskipulag veiða á makrílstofninum. Eftir að Ísland varð viðurkennt sem strandríki hafa staðið deilur um skiptingu heildarafla makrílstofnsins. Ríkin hafa einhliða ákvarðað kvóta sinn og þar af leiðandi hefur heildarafli ríkjanna farið talsvert yfir ráðlagðan heildarafla Alþjóða hafrannsóknaráðsins. Þessar deilur standa enn og ekki náðist að semja um skiptingu heildaraflans fyrir árið 2013. Einnig hefur ESB sett reglugerð sem heimilar aðgerðir gegn ríkjum sem ekki stunda sjálfbærar veiðar á þeim stofnum sem ESB hefur hagsmuni af, sem er jákvætt að mati Íslands, en þó ríkir óvissa um hvort beiting ákvæða reglugerðarinnar yrði lögleg gagnvart Íslandi.

For some time there has been a dispute among Iceland, EU, The Faroe Islands, Norway and Russia about the macerel stock. At first the dispute was about whether Iceland would be recognized as a coastal state concerning the macerel stock but Iceland had consistently demanded to be considered as a coastal state ever since the first agreement was made between these three nations concerning the management of the macerel stock in the year 1999, but was never accepted. It was not until the year 2009 that Iceland was acceepted as a coastal state and invited to participate in the management of the macerel stock. Now when Iceland is a recognized coastal state there are disputes about how the total catch (TAC) should be divided between parties. A conclusion conserning that matter has yet to be found and parties now unilaterally set their own quotas and therefore the TAC is not compatible to the TAC recommended by ICES. The EU issued a regulation that allows EU to act against nations that allow non-sustainable fishing of stocks that the EU has an interest in. which is a good thing but non the less there is some uncertainty whether it would be legal to use the provisions of this regulation against Iceland.
