Framkvæmd var eigindleg rannsókn þar sem markmið rannsóknarinnar er að fá aukinn skilning á upplifun barna af tómstundaiðkun og fá innsýn í félagsleg samskipti þeirra. Tekin voru viðtöl við sex börn á aldrinum 10-12 ára af erlendum uppruna. Áhersla var lögð á að skoða hvort börnin væru að taka þátt í skipulögðu tómstundastarfi og hvort þau tækju þátt út frá vinatengslum eða út frá eigin áhugasviði. Skoðuð voru vinatengsl og og félagsleg virkni barnanna og félagsleg staða þeirra metin út frá því. Einnig var athugað hvað börnin töldu sig læra af tómstundunum.
Niðurstöður rannsóknarinnar sýna að við val á tómstundum virðist áhugi hjá þeim einstaklingum sem hafa sterka sjálfsmynd vega meira en vinatengsl, en þau sem eru óöruggari og hafa veik félagsleg tengsl þurfa frekar á stuðningi vinar að halda. Flestir viðmælendur áttu erfitt með að meta hvað þeir lærðu af þeim tómstundum sem þeir stunduðu.
In my profession as a teacher with focus on multiculturalism, it became
clear to me that social aspects are a big part of adjusting to a new society
and that most of it will happen outside school time. The purpose of this
project includes drawing attention to the importance of social aspects in
children’s lives when adjusting to Icelandic society, bearing in mind that all
children can grow and mature within the networks they make during
organized leisure.
A qualitative study was made in which the desirable goal was to gain an
understanding of the experiences that children get from leisure
participation and to gain insight into their social interaction. Interviews
were conducted with six children of foreign origin between the ages of 10-
12 years. Emphasis was placed on examining whether the children were
involved in organized recreational activities and whether they took part as a
result of interaction with friends or out of their own interest. The
friendships, social activity and social status of the children were surveyed
and valued accordingly, as well as examining what children thought they
learned from leisure activities.
The results of the experiment shows that for individuals with a strong
self-image choosing leisure activities weighs more than bonding with
friends, and those who are more insecure and have weak social
connections, needed support from a friend.
