In this research paper the nature and use of English as a lingua franca in business (BELF) will be examined and compared to English as a foreign language (EFL). Why BELF is the more suitable form of communication medium for MNCs will be discussed and whether there is a need for cultural awareness to be implemented for successful cross-border communication. Some of the national cultural characteristics and dimensions will be introduced and some personal examples will be given in relation to those characteristics. Furthermore a suggestion as to how one can learn such competence will be introduced. The conclusion is that English as a lingua franca in business is the most logical choice for verbal communication and unofficial written communication for MNCs doing business cross-borders. There is also a definite need for culture to be taken into the equation when it comes to international communication. In order to cultivate effective cross-border communication skills there needs to be an understanding of the interlocutor’s cultural environment.
