To prepare the standardization of the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI) for adults in Iceland we investigated its psychometric properties. The WASI was administered to a stratified quota sample of 241 indviduals aged 17–64 years, stratified by residence, sex, age and education. Results show the same factor structure in the Icelandic sample as in the US sample. Item difficulty on three subtests differes substantially from that of the US version. The item difficulty is different in 80% of items in Matrix reasoning, 46% in Similarities and 30% in Block design. Item difficulty in this sample is also substantially different in the subtests Matrix reasoning, Vocabulary and Similarities compared with the order of items in the Icelandic handbook. The reliability of all four subtests is lower than in the US standardization sample. The split-half reliability of the Vocabulary subtest is good, satisfactory for the Matrix reasoning, and lower for Block design and Similarities. Interrater reliability of the Similarities subtest is good and compatible with the US version, indicating that the rules of scoring and administration are objective and reliable. The results show that the rules of discontinuation of the US version apply to three of the subtests in the Icelandic sample. However, the discontinue rules of the Vocabulary subtest and scoring rules of Block design need reevaluation. The age ranges used in the US version apply to the Icelandic sample. Education effects participants’ performance, however, sex has no effect. With the US norms the test overestimates participants’ Performance intelligence and underestimates their Verbal intelligence. This study shows that the psychometric properties of WASI are acceptable in Iceland and therefore fulfil the psychometric requirements for standardization.
