This report in addition to the comics I will produce, will form my M.Ed.-paper at the University of Iceland. The paper involves ten editions of comic books accompanied by an academic report. The aim of this report is to increase the diversity of reading material for students aged six to nine years old. Three main questions were considered regarding how comics can be useful to students’ reading and how they can motivate them to read?
The first three comics are completed and a draft of the other seven is underway. The comics are each eight pages long including the front and back cover. The stories revolve around the adventures of a dog called Kátur. The plot of each story will resonate with the reality and experiences of children of this age. The comics will include colourful illustrations of further engage the audience.
Research shows that students’ motivation to learn has a direct relationship to performance in reading and therefore it is important that the students have a good variety of reading material. Comics are an engaging format for children to read and therefore it is challenging and relevant to write such reading material for beginners. Research also shows that comics are one of the only forms of reading material that capture the mind of some young readers and that comics can be a stepping stone into further interest in reading. Again research shows that self-regulation and the enjoyment of reading are the most significant factors in the prediction of academic achievement. If students have the opportunity to select appropriate reading material independently they are more likely to have a positive reading experience.
Reading material which is currently available is classified according to ability. The reading material which is classified for beginners assumes an average reading ability, if a student´s ability is slower than average, but without a specific reading disability, the material becomes too difficult and the student can lose motivation. By writing these comics the author is making an effort to increase the diversity of existing reading material. In addition the author is trying to demonstrate that the form and characteristics of the comic can be useful for that. The author hope’s that we will not stop here but continue to developing diverse reading material for this age group in the future.
