„Everybody profits“ : the attitude of employees of two schools towards operating preschools and elementary schools jointly
With the new acts on preschools and compulsory school in 2008, communities were authorized to operate preschools and elementary schools jointly under one management, which had not been possible under the previous laws. A few communities have taken advantage of this authorization and merged a preschool and an elementary school into a single institution. The main objective of this research was to get the managers‘ and employees‘ opinion on joint operation of preschool and elementary school, among other things, with regard to institutional culture. They were asked about their assessment of the main advantages of this operating method and the main obstacles, as well as about how they cooperate and promote continuum in the students’ education.
This is a qualitative research and the data was collected by individual interviews with ten employees and managers of two jointly operated elementary and preschools, in the spring of 2013. The schools are located in a large community, on the one hand, and in a small community, on the other. One of the schools has been operated as a joined elementary and preschool since it was founded three years ago but the other one was established when a few smaller schools merged about four years ago. Employees who work with students on the border of the two levels were selected for participation.
The main conclusions of the research show that all the people interviewed are in favor of operating a preschool and elementary school jointly and see various advantages in operating schools of this kind. Purposeful cooperation of 5 years old preschoolers and 6 years old elementary school students promotes a continuum in their education and makes the shift to the next school level easy for them. The culture of these schools is characterized by positive thinking, respect, friendship and extensive cooperation between students, employees and parents. The group of employees becomes stronger because it consists of more people with different experiences, education and skills. There is also some financial gain, especially if the whole school uses a single building where all facilities can be shared. Obstacles are created by different wage agreements of the employees and school buildings if they are not shared by both levels.
