The goal of this research is to look at the experience of foreign parents when their child starts preschool and explore how the preschool and the town support the adaptation of the child and the parents at the preschool. In the research the following hypothesis is explored: What is the experience of foreign parents when their child starts in an Icelandic preschool?
This is a qualitative research done by interviewing the parents. To gather data semi structured interviews were done with parents of six children in two preschools in one town. Orientation plan for the bilingual children for the preschools was investigated and also the town's plan as to services for foreign born children and their parents.
The results show that foreign born parents in those two preschools are generally happy with the preschools and the programs that are offered, even though their knowledge of the curriculum is limited. Also the results show that foreign born parents frequently instigate the communication with the preschool and there is lack of communication from the preschool and active participation at the preschool by those parents. Language difficulties influence the cooperation and communication between the parents and employees of the preschools and limit the participation from the parents for scheduled events like parent teacher conferences. The research further shows the need to improve adaptation of the children and their parents and look more at their cultural background. Last, but not the least, it should be mentioned that foreign born children have almost no communication (play dates) with other children from the preschool outside normal school hours. The same can be said of the parents, they do not associate with other parents from the preschool.
