Learning to compose meaningful texts of different kinds constitutes an important part of writing acquisition. Skilled writers are able to produce a variety of texts that show genre specific features and use varied conjunctions to create cohesion. During the first years of elementary school, children’s proficiency in text writing is relatively poor. Their texts tend to be short, lack both coherence and cohesion and do not follow a genre specific structure. However, with increasing encoding abilities, linguistic skills and knowledge about text genres, children’s ability in text writing increases steadily across the elementary grades. Research indicates that children’s performance in text writing is strongly influenced by various aspects of their learning environment. These include the degree of emphasis that is placed on writing instruction in their school, the nature of the writing instruction itself and even culture-specific views to writing and the teaching of writing. Thus, in order to get a better understanding of the processes involved in the acquisition of writing, research based on children from a variety of cultures and learning contexts are of great importance. Very few studies have focused on the development of writing among Icelandic-speaking children. Consequently, we have limited knowledge of how Icelandic students acquire this important aspect of literacy and what characterises their production of different genres at different ages. The main purpose of this longitudinal study was to explore Icelandic children’s writing ability in grades 2 to 4 and compare their performance in producing two common text genres, narrative and information texts. A group of 45 Icelandic children from two schools was followed up through second, third and fourth grade. Their mean age was 7 years and 9 months at the first data collection. Each year the children were asked to compose two texts – one narrative and one information text. Text samples were analysed according to text length, structure and cohesion. The results showed that on all three testing occasions the children performed significantly better when producing narratives than information texts. The narratives were more cohesive than the information texts and also showed stronger text genre characteristic features. The children also made greater improvement over time on all indicators of proficiency (text length, structure, cohesion) in their productions of narratives than of information texts. These findings are in line with results obtained in other studies of young children’s text writing skills. Narrative writing seems to be the text genre that young children are most familiar with and first become able to compose in writing. However, the results also raise questions about the quality of writing instruction in Icelandic elementary schools. Progress in writing seems to be quite slow, especially in the ability to produce information text. In this study, no difference was found between the quality of the children’s productions in this kind of genre in grades three and four. This may suggest that Icelandic children do not get sufficient instruction in text writing and about different text genres in the first grades of elementary school.
