This MA-thesis consists of a creative writing project: an historical novella, Giulietta and Romeo (approx. 27,000 words), and a report on its composition and background (approx. 12,000 words). The novella is an adaptation of two Italian Renaissance novellas about the adventures of Romeo and Giulietta (known as Juliet in Shakespeare‘s play), by Luigi da Porto (1535) and Matteo Bandello (1554).
The novella is told in the first person past tense, from the point of view of the central character, Giulietta Cappelletti, the only daughter of the Veronese nobleman Lord Antonio Cappelletti and his wife Lady Giovanna. Merely eighteen years old in 1302, Giulietta falls in love with a young man who turns out to be cursed with the family name of Montecchio – her own family’s worst enemy. Blinded by first love, Giulietta does not let his family ties prevent her from being with Romeo. Unfortunately, however, no matter how she tries, her fate is eventually out of her hands.
The report expounds how Giulietta and Romeo came to be, from the origin of the legend of Romeo and Juliet to the inspiration for the clothes Giulietta Cappelletti wears on her wedding day. Research included the fourteenth century setting, the local architecture, epistolary culture, religious practices, herbal remedies, execution and historical accounts of other Medieval European traditions. Although the various scenes discussed in the report are described to some extent, the assumption is made that the reader has first read the novella and can recognise the scenes referenced. Therefore, in this thesis, the novella is placed before the report.
