Bearing in mind that undergraduate students in foreign-language departments are nonnative readers, the instruction of literature should be sensitive to their needs as language learners. In spite of this, literature professors rarely have the opportunity to take a method course where they are trained to face issues like unbalanced language proficiency among students or the cultural gap that obstructs the understanding of a literary text. The aim of this thesis is to present a literature teaching field experience where different pedagogical approaches are integrated in order to meet foreign language students requirements, that is, engage them to practice their writing and speaking while developing their literary competence in the foreign language. The lesson plan, which was held in a course within the Spanish BA curriculum at the University of Iceland, incorporated the collaborative analysis of poems by three of the most influential Chilean poets: Vicente Huidobro, Pablo Neruda and Nicanor Parra.
