In this paper I present the results of my research into the perception and experience of six heads of public offices situated in the rural rather than urban areas of Iceland. While increased participation of women in the workforce has been the topic of investigations as well as their position in the labour market during the past decade, men have been the majority of department heads within the public sector, and still are. Presently, some 32% of departmental heads nationwide are female, of which the percentage in the countryside is less, or about 26%. From my point of view, this difference validates a research into why this should be so, and what possible reasons there are for this status, as it is. For carrying out this research, the method of qualitative research was used, as six directors, three women and three men were submitted to deep interviews data, with the aim of gathering first-hand information for shedding some light on and finding probable reasons for the under-presence of women as a group within the hierarchy of public office. Questions to be asked and answered were: What, if any, might be the possible factor of influence, negative or positive; Is there a discernible difference in how each gender experiences any or unlike obstacles on their career track, and; What difference, if any, might the location of the establishment itself have gender wise, as a factor of change and/or decision as to their career moves, within the group.
The main conclusions of the research were that the loci itself, i.e. where the department itself is situated in terms of geography and population, is an issue and as such plays a large role in the scheme of things, in that the distance from the governing power has an effect on the interviewee's career moves.
Gender – rural areas – directors – public offices
