Speech-language pathologists have specialized in speech and language. When an anomaly appears in the language development of children, speech-language pathologists can intervene in an attempt to assist the child in the area that deviation is shown. It is good to use a language developmental test as it shows the weakness and strength in the child‘s language and identifies whether it is necessary to assist the child in language development. It is believed to be better to make a language developmental tests for Icelandic children from scratch, with their community in mind and compare them with their peers using Icelandic criteria which are not translated and standardized from other languages. The reasoning behind developing the test from scratch is that the way Icelandic children learn language is not the same as e.g. English children learn language because Icelandic has more grammar and the words that Icelandic children know are not necessarily the same as those of children from another countries. Therefore it has to test different words. In this pilot study of the Icelandic language development test the words for the semantic parts of the tests were chosen from Jóhanna T. Einarsdóttir‘s research of children‘s language which gives a realistic idea of how Icelandic children talk.
The participants in the pilot study were 100 Icelandic preschool children aged 4;0 – 6;0 years old. The answers were divided into three age groups; 4;0 – 4;3, 4;10 – 5;1 and 5;8 – 5;11 years old, in order to make an aged based comparison. The results showed which test items were age distinctive, had strong correlation, good weight and good reliability. From these items it was possible to choose test items which could be used for the next step in the development of a test that has the working name Málfærni eldri barna‘s (MEB). The results showed that there were no significant differences in capability between genders. The mother‘s education level showed only significant correlation in one age group compared with the participants‘ overall score.
These results will be used for the continuing development of MEB. They give important information about both expressive and receptive vocabulary of Icelandic children between the ages of four and six. This is the first time that specifically concept vocabulary of children of these age groups has been researched. Furthermore, there are also only a handful of studies regarding vocabulary of Icelandic children with this research adding more insight into that area. This pilot study will hopefully be useful as a foundation for gathering norms for vocabulary acquisition for children of certain ages. It will hopefully also lead to more research about language of Icelandic children, in regards to prediction of studies and reading.
