Þau atriði voru ýmist með neikvæða fylgni og/eða of lága fylgni við prófþátt, voru of létt eða of þung, voru ekki aldursgreinandi og/eða sýndu ekki vaxandi getu með hækkandi aldri.

Speech-language pathologists provide intervention and therapy for children with language impairment. For the speech-language pathologists to be able to evaluate the severity of a child’s impairment they need valid and reliable assessment tools. The tests Icelandic speech-language pathologists use to evaluate language development of four to six year old children are all translated from English to Icelandic. The most frequently used test for this age is TOLD-2P, which was translated, localized and standardized for Icelandic speaking children in 1995. It has been beneficial for many years, however it is time to compose an all-Icelandic language development test based on Icelandic children’s knowledge.
In the present research items of two test components, Sentence Completion and Interpretation of Sentences, were pre-tested for a new language development test for four to six year old children. The test items were pre-tested on 98 children in nine preschools in Reykjavík, ages four to six and divided into three age groups, 4;0-4;3 years old, 4;10-5;1 years old and 5;8-5;11 years old. The main purpose of the research was to determine whether the test items in the two test components are suitable for evaluating four to six year old children’s language development. In addition to the pre-testing, a questionnaire was sent to the children’s parents and they asked to answer a few questions including how many days a week someone at home reads for the child, how interested the child is in looking through books and listening to stories.
Both test components evaluated children’s competence in syntax, their grammatical knowledge and vocabulary. The test component Sentence Completion primarily evaluated children’s understanding of syntax and it included 38 test items with pictures. The test component Interpretation of Sentences primarily evaluated children’s knowledge of certain grammatical elements, for example plural and past tense, and their ability to predict what word was missing from an unfinished sentence they heard. Sentence Completion was divided into A and B components where A component included pictures as a support for the test items but no pictures were included in the B component.
The main results showed the children’s ability increased with increased age in both test components, but not in all test items. Based on the results several test items in both test components appeared not to be suitable to evaluate four to six year old children’s language development. Those items either had negative correlation and/or low correlation, were too easy or too difficult, did not distinguish between age groups and/or did not show increased knowledge with increased age. However, these items do not all have to be deleted because some of them will not change the internal reliability of the test components if they are deleted. For some items the pictures have to be reviewed because they could possibly have influenced children’s answers. There was a significant difference between the skills of four and six year old children who were read to daily and those who were read to twice or fewer times each week, indicating that reading many days a week had a positive effect on children’s skills on the test components. There was also a significant difference between the skills of four year old children who were very interested in looking through books and listening to stories and the skills of those who were sometimes interested in looking through books and listening to stories.
