    Abstract
Care and parent-child attachment affect the progression of mental and physical development of the child. Knowledge of the development of secure and insecure relationships is important for nurses working in infant and child health services. Nurses are in key position to support new parents by enhancing their knowledge of the behavior and abilities of the baby. Thus, they can help parents respond to their child’s needs at this delicate state of development and report any anomalies that need particular attention.
The purpose of this theoretical overview is to summarize search on attachment between parents and infants and factors therein. Furthermore, to highlight the value of a secure attachment for ongoing good health and to raise awareness of the role of nurses in this context. Sources were obtained by reading books and peer-reviewed scientific articles. References were made in the databases PubMed, Leitir, and Google Scholar, from October 2013 to May 2014 .
Results of the project indicated that the parents’ sensitivity for the child’s signalling, reciprocity and synchronization in their relationship, the parents’ relationship with their own parents, along with other factors promote secure attachment between parents and child. Within all this, the results indicate the importance of the primary care nurse’s relationship with new parents.
It is important to increase the knowledge of professionals on attachment between parents and children and encourage dialogue in the community. For this it is necessary to promote the education of health professionals about the value of attachment, communication and development of infants and their families.
Nurses in infant and child health services regularly monitor the progress of the health and development of children. They are in frequent communication with parents and their newborn children and can have a positive effect on strengthening the parent-child relationship through focused education and prevention.
Keywords: cues, hormones, brain- and nerve development, parent-infant relations, attachment, infant care.
