A well designed and organised quality environment creates a space for various activities and social interactions. With improved organisation and design the variety of activities people can choose from is increased, and the surroundings welcome people to stick around, sit down, eat and enjoy the moment. The frequency of basic activities is the same in well organised areas, but activities become more varied with better design of the surroundings.
In streets and city spaces that are poorly organised people tend leave once the basic activity has been completed. One of the aspects that influence the quality of spaces are squares and street frontages, a vital part in the pedestrian experience of a city.
The purpose of this paper is to assess where the centre of the town of Hveragerði is situated in the minds of the inhabitants, and to evaluate the social interactions in that centre based on the theories of the architect Jan Gehl.
The study subsisted of two phases. To begin with questionnaires were mailed to a sample group of inhabitants of Hveragerði, aged 15 and up, with the purpose of locating the centre of Hveragerði. On the basis of these questionnaires two areas were chosen and then studied with behaviour analysis.
The results of the questionnaires were clear, in the minds of the inhabitants the centre of Hvergerði is Breiðamörk, the main street of Hveragerði. Today Breiðamörk is designed for cars with plenty of parking spaces. To enhance the social aspect of pedestrian life in Hveragerði the street space design also needs to incorporate people. Designing and organising streets with a good street space is tricky, and even trickier when the same applies to a whole centre. It’s important to look at the street and the space as a whole, and design and organise the space to enhance the pedestrian experience, and enable people passing through to enjoy themselves by the street, walking or biking at a slow pace, stop, interact with others and rest.
The main finding of this study was that although Breiðamörk did score highest in the questionnaire the street is mainly designed for cars.
But in fact it can be argued that Hveragerði has two centres. Although area 1 is busier observation showed that the variety of people’s activities was greater in area 2. The number of people occupying an area isn’t a measurement of the area’s quality, but rather the variety of people’s activities and the time people spend at a given area.
The importance of the old town centre, area 1, is diminishing while area 2 is becoming more of a centre. The result of the behaviour analysis is that the centre is moving. The introduction of the strip mall at Sunnumörk, with its well-known shops, seems to have drawn the centre to the lower part of Breiðamörk. Today the old town centre is mainly focused around services and institutions, with no space for optional or social activities. Area 2 incorporates shops, restaurants and services, and also works as a venue for festivities. The finding of the behaviour analysis is that the centre is moving.
Institutions, service companies, restaurants and shops line up along the Breiðamörk street. Therefore it can be said to the focus point of Hveragerði, as almost all traffic in and out of the town passes through there. It frames the everyday existence of most inhabitants and therefore plays a vital role as the town most important area.
It’s preferable to improve the quality of these areas for the inhabitants as well for people passing through. The town centre, Breiðamörk, needs to be viewed as a place that one can enjoy and spend time at.
Therefore it would be a good idea to improve the properties the street already has to fulfill such demands. Diversity of functions needs to be enhanced and vegetation increased.
One of the basic conditions promoting a living centre is mix of centre functions and dense population, creating a traditional town space.
