The following thesis is a final assignment for a B.Ed. degree at the faculty of Education at the University of Akureyri. The subject addressed in the thesis is a teaching strategy, or method, referred to as "flipped learning". The aim is to shed light on the origin and nature of the method as well as examining its pedagogical value. The method is defined and described, and main criticisms outlined. Following that, flipped learning is examined in light of developments in the use of information- and communication technology, focusing in particular on distance education and the concept of blended learning. Flipped learning is also examined in the light of two very different theories of learning; the behavioural learning theory and constructivism, and these two theories compared. In addition, the focus will be pointed towards teaching strategies which have been linked to constructivism and the relationship between these and flipped learning explored in order to find out whether they are conceptually related. Lastly the effectiveness of using flipped learning as a teaching strategy is examined with regard to factors listed in the national curriculum as key competences when graduating from elementary school.
Analysis of the literature reveals that flipped learning is a relatively new phenomenon in the form that it is implemented. The method has evolved from distance learning as a part of changes that information- and communication technology has brought about. The emphasis that advocates of flipped learning have made on student centred teaching strategies complies with the teaching strategies emphasized by constructivism. As such, flipped learning seems to have the potential to serve as an effective teaching strategy in working towards the factors listed in the national curriculum as key competencies. The claims made in the national curriculum about promoting active learning through a variety of teaching methods should be met by using flipped learning as one of these methods. But as with other things that happen in the classroom, it depends on the teacher, whether flipped learning proves to be successful or not.
