Everyone should be able to study music if they want to, but are all kids being given an equal opportunity?
My Masters thesis is about how parents of musically oriented children with disabilities, and these par- ents’ approach to their children’s musical education.
Prof. Anne Bamford’s report on art education in Iceland concluded that students receive quality hands-on education. There are many music schools in the country and they are of a high standard. However, she also discovered that there are not many children with disabilities enrolled in these schools, even thought these institution maintain to be accessible to all.
But do parents of disabled children feel that their children are as welcome as able- bodied children? Why are parents of children with disabilities less likely to enrol their children in music schools than parents of children without disabilities? Is it because they are not all equally as welcome? We are all first and foremost people, rather than disabled or able, and we all find pleasure in developing our skills. The role of the music schools is to help stu- dents develop and mature, as well as fostering their creative skills. Yet there seems to be a discrepancy regarding information on the schools’ accessibility, because parents of children with disabilities feel that their children don’t belong in the schools, even though the schools claim otherwise.
