English title - Comparison of penetration resistance to PDR and pile capacity
When building big structures on loose soils it may be necessary to use pile foundations to ensure that they can carry all applied load and the deformations of the soil will not affect the building utility value. Pile foundations are rather expensive so it can be profitable to be able to predict the pile driving resistance (PDR), how deep the pile can be driven and the bearing capacity of the pile before the pile driving begins.
The research of this thesis is two-fold. First, to examine whether there is a relationship between pile driving resistance and resistance in dynamic sounding (dynamic probing test (DP)). On the other hand it was examined whether it is possible to use results from dynamic sounding to estimate the pile capacity. Eight bridge foundations were examined in each part, in total 147 piles and 28 DP holes.
To compare results between the PDR and the DP test the energy needed to penetrate both the pile and the drill rod were drawn on a graph to see whether there are a relation or not. Since much more energy is needed to penetrate the pile than the rod, the energy was correlated both for the cross section area and the surface area of the pile and the DP rod. Results showed that there was no relation between the PDR and the DP resistance when corrected for the surface area. In all comparisons, when corrected for the cross section area, there was a good relation between the PDR and the DP resistance for the first few meters of the penetration. In around half of the cases it seemed like the pile and the DP rod had penetrated into another soil layer that does not give the same resistance to the pile and the DP rod. Results of this part of the research also showed that in general piles can’t be driven through more DP resistance than 85 – 130 kJ/m. The results of this thesis only apply to the equipment that The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration use.
Two methods were tested to see whether it was possible to use DP resistance to estimate pile capacity. These methods were a modified one using SPT results, and then it was investigated whether it was possible to use the Janbu pile driving formula for the DP results and scale the results up to estimate the pile capacity. The results of these two methods were than compared to calculated values of the pile capacity. Results showed that pile capacity can be estimated with these two methods but to increase the reliability further research is necessary where results from these methods are compared to results from load tests.
