The aim of this study was to address the relationship between ADHD diagnosis and self-esteem as well as examining whether parental support could serve as a mediating factor in this relationship. The hypotheses set forth were three: First, students with ADHD diagnosis have lower average self-esteem then students without ADHD diagnosis. Second, there is a positive association between parental support and self-esteem. Third, the effects of ADHD diagnosis on self-esteem are mediated through parental support. The study was based on data from a national survey of Icelandic adolescents carried out in 2014 by ICSRA (Icelandic Center for Social Research and Analysis). The sample included 2.028 students from 8th, 9th and 10th grade from all Icelandic secondary schools. Results showed that students with ADHD diagnosis had lower average self-esteem then students without ADHD diagnosis and a positive relationship between parental support and self-esteem was found. They also showed that the effects of ADHD diagnosis on self-esteem were mediated through parental support. Therefore all three hypotheses were supported.
