Titill:

Everyone is equal, and so is their right to participate: The Democracy and Democratic Methods of Principals and Teachers in Elementary and Pre-Schools
The main objective of this thesis was to expose some of the different facets of democracy in education as well as showing what the views of principals and teachers are towards democracy, how it permeates their work and communication with children and students and how they believe it should affect the structure of the educational environment.
In recent years, democracy and democratic practices have played an increasingly larger role as building blocks within the educational sector. Academic scholars agree that in educational organizations, these building blocks are the cornerstone of the life, work and education of children, and that they essentially revolve around our perspectives, future vision, respect, efficacy of education and environmental literacy.
In schools identified as democratic, which foster democratic principles, children can actively participate with their teachers in shaping their studies and in demographic environments children have shown to have a higher capacity in employing environmental literacy.
For the purpose of this thesis, the author made use of qualitative research methods in collecting data and information through interviews and field visits to one elementary school and one preschool in the Reykjavik metropolitan area in early January 2014.
The results indicated that democracy was indeed a factor in the educational work being performed at both the preschool and elementary levels, with it being more prevalent at the preschool where children could more efficiently impact their educational environment. That being said, demographic principles were observed in effect at both school levels and particularly noteworthy was the exceptional quality of communication between principals, teachers and students respectively. The educational environment at both schools was found to be properly structured and showed clear signs of demographic principles in action.
