Pedagogical Content Knowledge is the creation of Lee Shulman, who, in 1986, put forth his theory on the importance of intertwining two sources of knowledge when teaching any given subject, the knowledge of the subject itself and the pedagogy. His opinion was that a strong foundation in pedagogical content knowledge was a key characteristic of a good teacher. In this dissertation the ways of Icelandic language teachers in Icelandic secondary schools are studied and how said teachers use their pedagogical content knowledge to teach adolescents and meet them on their own terms. The aim was to answer the question: How do teachers associate their content knowledge with their pedagogical knowledge as well as with their students interests, when teaching Icelandic in secondary school? To reach a conclusion, five teachers of Icelandic were chosen by purposive sampling, and interviewed qualitatively. Furthermore a group of six students from each teacher was interviewed collectively to better understand their perspective of the teaching.
The result of the study draws up an image of resourceful and inventive teachers and their work when teaching Icelandic. All the teachers that were chosen for interviews have a good reputation, are popular and memorable and manage to make the syllabus interesting in the eyes of the students. They all have one thing in common, a strong individual pedagogical content knowledge, which is apparent in their approach to the students, their adjustments of the syllabus to the needs of the students and their interests and in the assignments they choose to hand out. The teachers’ ideas and emphases were reflected in the students’ experience who all agreed that even though they felt that Icelandic as a subject is rather tedious, the teachers in question were able to make it interesting with their own enthusiasm and approach.
Teachers of Icelandic in secondary school as well as teachers of other subjects should be able to benefit from the result of this study and use it to strengthen their work in the classroom as well as their pedagogical content knowledge. Pedagogical professors can furthermore use the study to help their students develop a good foundation in pedagogical content knowledge. The evidence show that even though this theory is of a certain age it is still valid today. A strong pedagogical content knowledge still is, and will continue to be, one of the key characteristics of a good teacher.
