Studies have demonstrated that depression can have detrimental effects on the outcome of alcohol addiction treatment. Depression is a serious mental disorder characterized by depressed mood, anhedonia, hopelessness and more. Depression can also shorten the duration of abstinence (APA, 2013; Hasin et. al. 2002). Depression can be independent of alcohol use, but it can also be induced by heavy alcohol use (APA, 2013). The first objective of this study was to examine the relationship between depression and abstinence length. The second objective was to determine whether there was a different relationship between major depression and alcohol-induced depression on abstinence-length. A total of 1098 people took part in the study, all of which had undergone alcoholism treatment at SÁÁ. Data were gathered by SÁÁ Alcoholism Treatment Center and DeCode Genetics. The mean length of abstinence was 7,5 years. There was no difference between mean length of abstinence between depressed and non-depressed participants. People with major depression stayed abstinent longer than people with alcohol-induced depression, contrary to what was hypothesized. Recovery from alcoholism is not poorer for depressed persons than non-depressed persons.
