Fluid inclusion studies were implemented to assist in assembling the thermal history of the geothermal area of Krafla. Microthermometric analyses were performed on clear minerals, hand picked from cuttings from three deep wells in the Krafla geothermal field. The results were compared to alteration temperature and formation temperature of the samples. Different location of the boreholes allowed for determination of the temperature differences within the system. Cuttings were analysed in petrographic microscope in order to outline the stratigraphy of the area, evaluate the alteration of primary minerals and the origins of vein fillings. SEM-EDS image analysis and chemical analyses were also used to define the degree of alteration within the system. Together, these analyses give a comprehensive understanding of the alteration in the deeper part of the Krafla geothermal system. These analyses support the evaluation of the early temperature within the Krafla geothermal system and address the question if the system is getting colder or warmer.
Primary minerals of the samples show a wide compositional range that reflects rock composition from primitive tholeiite-basalt to rhyolite resembling the whole Krafla rock suite. Alteration minerals indicate that the samples of this study are mostly within the chlorite-epidote alteration zone although few samples reach into the epidote-actinolite zone. The homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions in Krafla are generally above the boiling curve of water. This may be explained by intrusions causing mineral precipitation and formation of inclusions at temperatures above the boiling curve of water. The favored explanation is, however, that higher pressure due to glacier load controled the boiling conditions during inclusion formation. The main result is that the alteration minerals and the fluid inclusions have in most parts been formed at higher temperature than the presesnt formation temperature in Krafla.
