  • Tilgangur þessarar rannsóknar er að skoða hvernig börn með gigt upplifa stöðu sína í skólanum og hvernig skólastjórnendur, kennarar og annað starfs-fólk kemur til móts við þarfir barna með langvinna sjúkdóma eins og gigt.
Á hverju ári greinast 10–14 börn á Íslandi með barnagigt sem er langvinnur sjúkdómur og getur haft mikil áhrif á líf barnanna.
Tekin voru viðtöl við fjórar stúlkur á aldrinum 11–18 ára og fjórar mæður. Allar hafa stúlkurnar þurft að kljást við gigt og afleiðingar hennar í lengri eða skemmri tíma.
Í lögum um grunnskóla nr. 91/2008 er kveðið á um að skólinn beri ábyrgð á því að koma til móts við þarfir nemenda sinna hverjar sem þær eru.
Niðurstöður eru að almennt eru foreldrar ánægðir með skóla barna sinna og eru þakklátir fyrir það sem fyrir þau er gert. Það sem helst mætti betur fara er að boðleiðir innan skólanna mættu vera betri svo að ekki þurfi sífellt að útskýra og segja frá sjúkdómnum. Þátttakendur telja að ósýnileiki sjúkdómsins hamli því að skilningur sé til staðar. Börnunum þykir mikilvægt að geta tekið þátt í skóla- og félagsstarfi og mikilvægast er að eiga vini en eftir því sem þau eldast vilja þau minna ræða um sjúkdóm sinn og forðast það eftir fremsta megni.

The purpose of this study is to see how children with rheumatic disease feel about their situation in school and how school administrators, teachers and other members of staff meet the needs of children with chronic illnesses such as rheumatic disease.
Each year, ten to fourteen children in Iceland are diagnosed with rheumatic disease, a chronic inflammatory disease which can have a huge impact on the lives of the children.
Four girls, aged 11-18 years old, and four mothers were interviewed. The girls have all suffered from rheumatism and its consequences for longer or shorter periods of time.
In the Compulsory School Act nr. 91/2008 it is stated that compulsory schools in Iceland should be inclusive. The laws states that the school is responsible for meeting the needs of their students, whatever they may be.
The results include that in general parents are satisfied with their children‘s school and are grateful for the things that are done for them. Improvements may be most needed with channels of communication inside the school so that need to constantly explain and discuss the illness is eliminated. The participants believe that the invisibility of the disease may hinder understanding of the situation. The children feel that it is important to take part in the school and social activities and most important to make friends. As the children grow older they have less desire to discuss their disease and avoid it when at all possible.
