In 2005, the United Nations established the decade of 2005-2014 to be focused on Education for Sustainable Development. UNESCO supervises the implementation having as a goal to promote and encourage the school community to address sustainable development related themes. The focus of this research is to bring forth the decade goals and the main aim is to help the school-community realize what it takes for schools to meet the requirements established in connection with education for sustainable development. The present investigation is based on documents created by the United Nations for this decade, the European Union Education Program and the four participating schools. A general view of sustainable development is provided with focus on the environment, the society and the economy. Three of the participating schools are located in different areas within Iceland whereas the fourth one is situated in South England. Six interviews were conducted among individuals that were chosen due to the contribution they have made to developing the field of education in Iceland and abroad.
The decade of 2005-2014 on Education for Sustainable Development has had an impact in Iceland both by being included in the new curricula for pre-schools, elementary, and secondary schools; as well as in projects that attend to the future welfare and green economy. The schools have worked on projects related to sustainable development and specialists on the matter have delivered academic work and reports.
The main conclusions are that the concept of sustainable development is being approached more consistently than before. In accordance with the Icelandic participating schools the emphasis is on the environment and the society, whereas little or no emphasis is placed on the economic pillar of sustainability. The Icelandic interviewees appeared to have a more narrow understanding of the concept of education for sustainable development than the British participants in the study.
The participating schools are working consistently on the development of the education process by carrying out reverse mentoring, project-based teaching, and entrepreneurship in which teachers and students work hand in hand. All participating schools are working to make sustainability and sustainable development visible in their curricula and school activities. Schools could make better use of the local environment, the local community and the support system of the European Union to promote education for sustainable development. In order for the decade goals to be met, it is necessary to advance training programs that further key competences to progress towards sustainable development.
