The value creation of a brand is based on customer loyalty, perceived quality and affiliation with other brands among other things. Affiliation with a country of origin can affect brand loyalty, perceived quality and can differentiate a brand from competitors. The country-of-origin‘s image must fit the characteristics of the brand. Consumers use origin information to assess the product, the country of origin effect is involuntary and is based on the consumer‘s knowledge or lack of knowledge of the country.
The goal of this research was to find the perceived personality of Iceland and the content of the stereotype of Icelanders among participants from Iceland, Norway and Poland. Second, to see if there is a link between the stereotype and the country‘s perceived personality. The Stereotype Content Model was utilized and a model to measure the country-brand personality. The results indicate that the stereotype of Icelanders is both competent and warm. The personality dimension that stood out for being perceived by participants from all three countries was Excitement. Norwegian participants perceived the personality of Iceland stronger than participants from Iceland and Poland but Iceland‘s personality had the weakest perception among the Polish participants. Medium correlation was found between ability and leadership, excitement and sophistication. Warmth had medium correlation with excitement and peacefulness.
