In-yer-face theatre is a term used to describe a theatrical movement that caused an upheaval in British theater at the end of the twentieth century. The movement consisted of young playwrights who wanted to write about contemporary culture in their own way. Characteristic for their work is their use of a certain shock-tactic to discuss controversial and provoking subjects, and therefore the plays often contain scenes with filthy language, nudity, humiliation, unpleasant emotions, and violence. The objective was to create a theatrical experience where the audience couldn’t be neutral towards the subject matter of the plays, but instead had to take a stand against what they were seeing on stage. The plays push the limits of what is acceptable in society and often conjure unpleasant emotions in their audience. Sarah Kane is often regarded as one of in-yer-face theatres’ best playwrights as her plays are considered to really capture it’s concepts. The objective of this thesis is to review how Kanes’ plays reflect the concepts of in-yer-face theatre, with an emphasis on the plays’ violence.
