How has immigration been rendered visible as a security issue on the level of the EU, alongside organized crime with trafficking, terrorism and drug smuggling? This paper explores the institutional threat construction of irregular migration in the EU Commission. Furthermore, this paper examines the increasing involvement of security companies in monitoring the external border of the European Union, and Frontex's preemptive border surveillance practices. It argues that the mobilization of insecurity and fear invites the construction of new problems and the marketing of new solutions for the security industry. The market of „security“ generates its own demand, insofar as the social perception of threat is both cause and effect of the marketing of security solutions.
