The idea of this project started after I faced a serious illness and had gone through the process of returning to my workplace with the assistant of VIRK-rehabilitation. During the process I came across many events in which I felt that certain things could've been handled differently to make the process easier. I started wondering what would the best way to handle the situation and which things were actually affecting the process. The fact that between the years 2003-2012 there were over 7000 people who had received monthly payments from the union VR due to their incapability to work caused by their illness shows how necessary it is to inspect further what factors contribute to a successful return to the workplace and what businesses can do to increase the chances of the return being a success. How managers can deal with these types
of situations and work through the obstacles with the individual so he or she can return to work without anxiety and fear of having forgotten a part of their job, not meeting the expectations they're given due to their previous illness or being afraid of how the colleagues will react once he or she returns. While researching materials for the essay I found that this matter has not been widely researched, although there are similarities between those matters and how businesses should handle and adjust repatriates once they return back home after having worked overseas. Those materials can be used as a reference when creating a plan about how the employee should be received and the adjustment
process he or she needs to go through when returning to work after a long term illness. Due to the similarities between those two topics there is a short chapter which talks about how repatriates should be received after having worked internationally for the company. Following that there will be a chapter where, with looking at the previous topic, there will be a plan which will cover how to deal with an individual returning to work from a long term illness with both the company's and employee's best interests at heart.
