There is a recurring debate in the mainstream and social media of Iceland regarding the teaching of religion in primary schools, and more often than not the debate frames this issue negatively. There are strong voices criticizing the teaching of Christianity in this setting and calling for balanced religious education or even the abolishment of religious topics in the public schools. According to this viewpoint, the teaching of topics around religion should be in the hands of families and carried out at home.
This thesis explores the history of instruction of both Christianity and religion in general, from the Reformation to the present day, and the basis for teaching religion in a public setting, as well as the importance of appropriate education for teachers covering this topic.
In connection with this thesis, the author conducted a study of the present practice of religious instruction in public elementary schools in Akureyri, Iceland, and compared the practice to the requirements of the national education curriculum of 2013.
The results of the study raise many questions, including around the discrepancies from school to school on the teaching of religion. Christian education is still prominent in the schools surveyed, especially around Christmas and Easter, but some schools place more emphasis on education about Christianity than other religions. It seems also that the organization of the instruction is not very well defined, except for students at middle school level.
The importance of sufficient and professional instruction of religion to the prevention of ignorance and prejudice in the general population is a clear conclusion of a 2007 report prepared by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institution and Human Rights, following a conference in Toledo, Spain on the teaching religion and beliefs in public schools.
It is the conclusion of the author that the elementary schools of Akureyri, and likely more widely across Iceland, need to conduct a systematic review of the instruction of religion. Following the review, a thorough change in topics covered, teaching methods, and instructional materials would be required.
The attitudes of parents and the broader society to the topic of religious education in schools also need to transform so that this topic will be seen as positive and constructive for students and society as a whole.
