Evidence from a number of studies indicates that there may be group differences in the interpretation of vague quantifier response options. While little research has been done to explain how and when they occur two hypotheses have been suggested; the self-information and group norm hypothesis. In experiment 1 we attempted to produce the differences in the interpretation of vague quantifier response options both hypotheses predict in an online survey of university students (N= 814) where participants’ responses in vague and numerical terms were compared. None of the differences predicted by the two hypotheses emerged. In experiment 2 we made a second unsuccessful attempt to produce the differences predicted by the group norm hypothesis, again in an online survey with a second sample of university students (N=1877). In the same experiment we tested a possible explanation of the results based on the theory of conversational logic but the results did not support it. Our findings show that existing theoretical accounts do not adequately explain group differences in the interpretation of vague quantifiers. Additionally the findings are promising and encourage further research as the self-information and group norm hypotheses assume that group differences in interpretation are inherent to vague quantifier response options.
