In recent years, the frequency of mental illness has been increasing around the world, also among parents. The purpose of this literature review was to summarise what impact the parents’ various mental illness has on their children, as well as to discuss the available treatments for those who need the assistance.
The results indicate that mental illness amongst parents affect the cognitive, emotional and social well-being of children. The children of parents with mental illness are more likely than other children to develop mental illness themselves later in life. These illnesses include the increased likelihood of depression, anxiety and self-destructive behaviour. It is not only due to genetics that this transfer between generations occurs, but other factors such as the children´s circumstances during their upbringing including the behaviour of a parent also had a significant impact on how well a child adapts and develops.
In order to ensure the health and welfare of the children it is important that they have the opportunity to seek appropriate treatment options, as studies have shown that the impact of the parent´s mental illness on the children can be reduced with support and education. Several treatment options are available which parents and children can access, options such as tailored family therapy which consists of structured interviews, and group therapy, these treatment options can have a positive impact on the health and welfare of the children.
The resilience that these children can develop through appropriate age suitable education allows them to be able to cope with stressful situations. Resilience is a positive resource that enhances their ability to gain more self-confidence, to believe in their own ability as well as it increases the likelihood that the children have a positive outlook on their youth.
The databases Cinahl, ProQuest and PubMed were utilised to find articles to inform the literature review, the search was limited to the years 2005-2015.
Keywords: Mental illness of parents, children and adolescents, treatment, resilience.
