In 2013, a new chapter was written in Samherji hf.‘s history when the company bought the longliner Carisma Star. Before buying the longliner Samherji had only operated wetfish trawlers to fish for their fishplants. Later the longliner was named Anna and is now operated by Útgerðarfélag Akureyringa.
What is the difference between operating a longliner and a wetfish trawler? Is it cheaper to operate longliners, or is the quality of the fish better from longliners than wetfish trawlers? In other words, is it more efficient to operate a longliner than a wetfish trawler, if looked at the cost of operating fishing vessels and the quality of the fish? The goal of this report is to find that out, by calculating the cost of fishing one kilo of fish with a longliner and a trawler. The report will also find out whether the quality of the fish is better when caught from a longliner rather than a wetfish trawler, looking at the fillet utilization, size of the fish, gaping and more.
Information about the operating cost of a longliner and a wetfish trawler was mostly gathered from Samherji hf. The possible benefit from this report is that the operation cost of longliners in comparison with wetfish trawlers will be available, along with comparison on the quality of the fish. The report will show the cost of fishing one kilo of fish with a longliner and a wetfish trawler, taking the cost of salaries, bait, oil and fishinggear in to account.
The report‘s conclusions shows many interesting things. If looked at the total catch of the vessels, it is clear that bottomtrawl‘s ability to catch the main targeted specie is better than the longlines. To support this, the total catch of the trawlers consists of four species but the total catch of the longliners consists of seven to eight species.
According to the report‘s conclusions, it is more efficient to operate a wetfish trawler than a longliner. To name a few things, the wetfish trawlers in this report had a higher rate of the targeted specie, lower salary rate, more catch per trip, and most importantly lower cost per kilo of fish. In some cases the longliners came out better, for example when it came to quality of the fish, which is probably one of the most important thing. The quality of the fish from the longliners is better than from the wetfish trawlers, according to this report‘s conclusions.
