Titill:
  • Íslensk netverslun : greining á samkeppnisumhverfi íslenskra netverslana
  • Titill er á ensku Icelandic e-commerce : competitive environment of Icelandic e-commerce sites

Growing group of computer and Internet users has resulted in an increased demand for access to shops and services online. Consumption online has multiplied in recent years and there is no evidence other than that this trend will continue in the coming years.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the competitive environment of Icelandic online businesses.
Method: Data were collected in three qualitative interviews. Respondents were members of the management of three online shops in the country. The interviews were taped and analyzed for themes, using content analysis.
Results: A major theme was derived from the interviews: The Competition Status of Icelandic Online Shops. This central theme was then diagnosed down into six categories which were: Variety of delivery modes, Mailings costly, Customer access, Political environment, High entrance threshold and Online shopping features.
Conclusions: The competitive positioning of Icelandic e-commerce sites are good in many aspects, both when compared to traditional brick and mortar stores and to international competitors online. Although it can be quite difficult to compete in price with foreign companies, Icelandic online stores have many attributes that have value adding elements in the eyes of Icelandic consumers such as trust, warranty, ease of return and diversity in delivery. Also the online stores have a advantage over the brick and mortar stores when it comes to comfort, opening hours and access.
Keywords: E-commerce, Online shopping, competition, postal services and the Internet.
