This case study compares gender images in 24 rock or metal songs from the Nordic countries. It is introduced by the evaluation of the question what the terms “Nordic” and “Rock” mean in daily life
The songs are presented in sets of two, always one talking about a man and one talking about a woman. The themes are: Magic, Trail of Tears, teenagers, groupies, suicide, drugs, obsession to find a partner, annoying suitors, punishment for sex, dysfunctional love relations, humiliation and the lover as a mythical monster.
The results form a complex and diverse picture. For instance they describe both genders as evenly violent and possessive if only in the right context. Men receive milder punishment for harder crimes. Love relations do not work because of the lack of honest communication. Women are often rather the conservers of culture and hope while men conserve knowledge and history.
Rather than declaring this a universal picture of men and women in Nordic Rock Music, this study invites more research on a bigger spectrum.
