This research report describes a project constituting a final dissertation submitted for the M.Ed. degree at the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Iceland. The project consists of designing, developing and evaluating Moodle webs for students at secondary schools, to be applied both in blended and in distance learning. The roots or origins of the project lie in my return to teaching after 25-year break, a time I spent working in news- and information dissemination. On returning to teaching it seemed to me that the potential of the newly available information technology was not being aptly utilised in schools and that this left pupils ill-prepared for their future in this age of information technology. After some attempts to weave the use of information technology into traditional forms of teaching of social sciences, I decided in 2011 to venture to build a study environment for the students, using Moodle. The endeavour was a success and the webs grew in bulk and substance, containing audio-visual lectures, tasks, links and all sorts of resources plus a list of study objectives and a record of marks achieved. This changed the students‘ workflow from the setting of everyone listening simultaneously to lectures delivered at the black/white board and then proceeding to write their own essays, to working at their own pace, changing the tasks of the teacher to management and assessment. By the winter of 2013-14, students carried out nearly all of their work using the web. The question arose whether the physical location of teachers and students was relevant. And further whether the webs created could not be utilised for distance teaching/learning in cases of small rural schools which were short of teachers who specialised in particular fields of study. In order to assess further the viability of this, a rural school engaged in an experiment during the winter of 2014-15 and 7 pupils from that school used the Moodle webs. Instructors and administrators at the rural school were pleased with the results of the experiment. No technical issues arose and valuable experience in distance learning was gained. The main conclusions from these experiments are that Moodle is very applicable for both blended learning and distance learning at this school level. All the webs are open source and shared on the Reykjavik City Moodle Web and should therefore be a possible foundation on which to develop further teaching resources and technical solutions applicable to distance learning at this school level.
