Just as you are: Lessons in life skills education that are based on strengthening positive self-image in students, with the focus on the awareness of emotional intelligence.
The schools objective and role is to prepare the students to participate in a democratic society. In a society which is constantly evolving and the students require social, emotional, and not least moral preparation to deal with these requirements. It is important to focus on strengthening the students’ independent thinking, their initiative and ability to work together. This involves helping the students to be aware of their own strengths, both that are related to theoretical knowledge and vocational skills. In order to promote these factors the teaching needs to have different challenges where the students are involved in different tasks and to integrate their knowledge and skills.
The objective of this essay is to highlight the importance of integrating life skills and drama in a holistic way with basic elements in mind, e.g. creation, health and welfare. Scholars such as Ken Robinson, Elliot Eisner, John Dewey, Daniel Goleman and Howard Gardner agree on the importance of creative thinking and to use many different teaching methods and to use diverse methods to activate the skills that the students need to possess at the end of compulsory school. The focus in education has changed with time and there is greater focus on each student that he/she flourishes in the school system and can study in the line with his/her interests, abilities and skills.
This essay is about introducing curriculum for life skills that the author wrote for students in 8th to 10th grade. The curriculum is aimed to develop positive self image and awareness of the students’ own emotional intelligence. The emphasis is on the variety of teaching methods, especially when teaching drama. In author´s opinion there are more and more students that need different ways of teaching in order to have equal opportunities like other students to learn because students have different learning methods and it is important that it fits a broad spectrum of the students intelligence. The students have different skills and normal teaching methods are not always appropriate. The attempt with the subject is to compile the various factors that are relevant to the stigma, risk behavior, prevention, and emotion intelligence. The idea regarding this subject arose when the author read the book Englar Alheimsins by Einar Gudmundsson. The book describes the world of a mentally ill person, his loneliness and exclusion, and his confrontations with himself and the community around. There will be few tasks related to topics of the book mentioned in this essay.
