Reflections on Teaching Methodologies for Multi-cultural students in Iceland and Sweden.
This research considers in which ways the needs of multi-cultural students in the upper levels in primary school and lower levels of upper-secondary schools in Iceland and Sweden are met. The lens is directed at immigrants from both countries who have struggled within the school system as drop-out rates from further education among this group is highest. The research entails two primary schools and two upper-secondary schools from each country. Open interviews where taken with the school principals and teachers, and classroom lessons were observed. In keeping with the ideologies and theories on multi-cultural education and teaching, the teaching methodologies are examined and the school policies reviewed. Theories about institutions and school principals as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s Social Theory are considered. Also, the laws in both countries are compared with regard to the rights of immigrants and education.
The following questions are the basis for the research: How are multi-cultural students catered for in the procedures for primary and upper-secondary schools in Iceland and Sweden? As a continuation of the research question the following sub-question is asked: How are immigrants in upper-secondary schools received and are there any obvious differences between the student environment and teaching methodologies in primary and upper-secondary schools in both countries?
The results reveal differences in teaching methodologies and between teachers. They also show the importance of having a well-defined school policy that is followed-up by management.
