    Abstract
Childrens dances in the past and present. Material in folk dances for elementary school
The project of this thesis is children´s dances and folk dances with children in Iceland. The aim is to seek answers to the question what we know about folkdances for children as well as consider the idea whether folkdances are a cultural heritage worth preserving. The history of dance with children will be investigated and answers sought to the question whether dances where composed especially for children in earlier times.
Books were the main source of research and mostly limited to those written in Icelandic as the project was approached from an Icelandic perspective. Soon it became apparent that very little has been written about dance for children in Iceland and most sources including dance for children are since late last century. Two interviews were conducted, for the thesis, with women who have knowledge of nursery rhymes and dances with children. The thesis includes teaching material in folkdances for elementary school.
The teaching material in folk dances was collected from various sources with the aim that it would be diverse and entertaining, old and new composed in the style of folk dances. The conclusion of this thesis is that not much is known about folk dances for children. It is likely that there were no special dances for children until late last century. At least there is no evidence to be found in the written sources available, that special children’s dances existed prior to the 20th century. One can only speculate that children and adults may have adjusted dances to suit children and perhaps they danced simple movements to children´s songs and nursery rhymes. There are many dances composed for children in this century and late last century. Folk dances are a cultural heritage worth preserving and cultivating as well as the Sagas or traditional folk poems.
